Since we are all constantly on a mission to save money, I am going to let you in on 5 household hacks that will save you money by making them yourself. All of these hacks I do myself to save money. And believe me, they ALL save a lot of money overall.
5 Household Hacks That Will Save You Money
Wrinkle Releaser
For years I was buying Downy Wrinkle Releaser. But it was so expensive and most stores did not carry it. I was ordering it off of Amazon and paying more for a small bottle. I scoured the internet for a homemade version and found it. You simply purchase a spray bottle from the dollar store and some dollar store liquid fabric softener. Add about 1/4 cup of fabric softener and fill the entire bottle with warm water. Shake it up and store indefinitely. Before spraying clothing, shake the bottle and spray away. Hang to dry. You will save time by not having to iron your clothing and your clothes will smell fresh.
Coffee/Smoothies/Slushies/Gatorade
Stop buying coffee at Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. Make your own coffee at home. Buy a quality brand of coffee. I use Melitta and love it. Many times, you are buying coffee from Starbucks out of convenience – so learn to set aside five minutes in the morning to make your coffee at home before leaving for work. Smoothies and slushies are simple to make at home using an ordinary blender. Puree fruit and crush ice in your blender and you have your own healthier smoothies and slushies.
My son plays soccer and “needs” his Gatorade for practice and during the game. That can certainly add up! Here is a recipe for homemade Gatorade that we use and he loves it. I am convinced if you buy a bottle of Gatorade and save the bottle, your child will enjoy it just the same.
Water
Did you ever add up all the money you are spending on bottled water? Over the course of a year, I am certain it amounts to quite a lot of money. You can purchase a water filter that fits right onto your water tap. This one is $25 and does not need tools to attach it. Get yourself one of these steel water bottles and you are set. Now take the time to sit down and figure out how much you will be saving instead of spending on all that water.
Dishwasher Cleaner
Stop buying that commercial brand dishwasher cleaner that is at least $5. Go to the store with about .10¢ and buy Kool-Aid. Say what? Yup! Kool-Aid will make your dishwasher fresh and sparkly. I could not believe it when I seen it, but this is what we do. Go here for the simple process.
Ditch Convenience
Did you know that you pay more for shredded or cubed cheese than you would for the block of cheese? And that by buying your potatoes and carrots whole and shredding them at home will save you money? Find a food processor at the Goodwill and get shredding. Spend under $20 and get this tool that I have talked about here and here and get cubing.
Start incorporating some of these money saving hacks and you will see more money in your wallet.
